Their performances are jaw dropping. At a recent show at Bowery Electric in the city there were audible wows from the crowd, and looks of sheer excitement, and enjoyment from people who were seeing them for the first time.
I caught up with Turbo Goth before that show, and found out the following eight things you should know about this dynamic duo.

It’s very late at night and the morning sun is just about to break above the Detroit skyline. The water in the river has that delicious oily black look to it. All the while I have TURBO GOTH’s song Venus Flytrap on repeat, pumping through a refurbished set of Altec Lansing’s Voice of the Theatre speakers that a friend has asked me to store in my home away from home.
“I don’t mind you saving me.”
Before daybreak, with the Altec’s adding some low-end mush to the finesse of Venus Flytrap, I really wouldn’t mind Sarah Gaugler’s voice and Paolo Peralta’s music saving me. That is until I re-read one of Sarah’s & Paolo’s E-mails and realized I still have a lot to learn about TURBO GOTH.

Equal measures of industrial rock, seductive vocals and fashion glamour are woven together in the music of Turbo Goth. As popularity continues to grow in both their native Philippines and adopted home of NYC, the duo of Paolo Peralta and Sarah Gaugler now sets their sights on an official SXSW showcase. A new album titled “Master Force” is in the works, with first video single “Love Will Be All there Is” (streaming below) giving us a taste of what’s coming, with its close-up focusing on guitar strokes that sound like synth bursts in between Sarah’s sensual vocals lines. Its forward stomping progression, bass-buzzing crunch and Paolo’s slo-mo hair-flying movements are tempered by Sarah’s flirtatious come-hither vocals and graceful tattooed body. Picture a less-pop (and much cooler) Ariana Grande fronting a band like Ministry for what this band has to offer. They play an official SXSW showcase on 3/11 at Valhalla. – Dave Cromwell

Lead off track “Ready For Something New” sets the albums initial vibe with a dreamy, trip-hop feel. Distant, muffled voices and ambient textures are the first things you hear, before Sarah's smooth, precisely-placed-in-the-mix vocals deliver the title line (and more) in cascading, dream-like manner. Shuffling electronic percussion undulates underneath subsequent vocals stating “let me know when you're on your way.” There is a distinct soulful emotion running through this as Sarah cooos “I wanna watch the stars with you.” As percussion expands to busier ticketty movements, the primary change hook exhorts how “it seems like we both like the same things – the same dreams.” The overall attention to detail exhibits an uncanny precision, with layered vocal asides and interludes meticulously placed. “Hold on to the sparkles in the air” becomes one more rumination within this magical mystery groove.

I heard Austin, Texas became a fan of Paolo's dancing and Sarah's cool vocals that night.
What did that feel like?
For the bands that went before us, everyone was seated because the venue had seats, but when we started to play, they started dancing in front. It felt….

Can’t remember the last time I listened to an album that gave me a true experience. I rely on older albums to give me that feeling as a listener, sometimes I feel disenchanted by modern music and it almost makes me want to give up on what is new and retreat into yesteryear. Luckily I haven’t given up yet and am glad I didn’t, otherwise I would have completely missed out on Destroy Us All by Turbo Goth. - Steven Holt

Two kinds of love were blossoming in the late 2000s.
There is the customary exposition when speaking of Turbo Goth. Paolo Peralta was working as a sous chef at fine dining restaurant Nino, and Sarah Gaugler was a fine arts student at the University of Santo Tomas. Overlapping social circles dipped in the local music scene brought the two together, and Turbo Goth was born around 2007. Paolo recounts over email interview: “Sarah used to be so shy and quiet given her difficult childhood growing up, but when I heard her voice singing softly over the mix-CD she had playing in the car, to my ears her voice, soft and airy, was sweeter than The Sundays and so I decided to ask her to be my new vocalist.” It’s the stuff of great romances. The “boy meets girl” trope is well-worn, but it’s sometimes undeniable. And it’s always kind of a miracle when two people meet and turn out to be each other’s soulmates, romantically and artistically at the same time. - Jam Pascual

AUSTIN, TX- When I go through my selection process of acts that I want to catch at SXSW, I have my own personal preferences. Obviously, the quality of the music matters, but I’m always a little more excited when I see a band that features asian musicians.
When I clicked “play” on Turbo Goth’s Spotify playlist, the pulsing, distorted bass of “Venus Flytrap” filled my headphones and instantly caught my attention. All of a sudden, abrasive guitar riffs and piercing synths hit. Then the lead singer’s soft, delicate vocals, in an almost Hope Sandoval way, floats in and creates a satisfying balance. I was intrigued. When I found out the band was Asian, I dug a little deeper. - Derrick Lee

It only takes two to power through.
The turbo duo, made up of Sarah Gaugler on vocals (not to mention the needle, because she also does astounding tattoos) and Paolo Peralta on guitars, treats their audience to a roundtrip flight of the imagination.
The stage swiftly becomes a platform in a music box, with the clashing trinkets of a wildly dancing guitar and a humming figurine front and center. It just takes two warm bodies to create a celestial impact, contained in words and tunes.

“Our sound isn’t necessarily bound by a single genre,” says Sarah Gaugler, the vocalist of Turbo Goth. It’s true – the band can’t quite be called electronic rock, though it’s the easiest way to categorize the duo which also includes Paolo Peralta on guitar, synths, and drum loops. Gaugler speaks and sings each word in a carefully, calculated way, while during live performances, Peralta swings his guitar around wildly. Some songs sound like a blues-rock band from outer space, others are industrial, slightly frightening. It takes more than one listen to get a handle on them.
As well as fronting the band, Gaugler is an accomplished tattoo artist with her own studio in Chelsea called Snow Tattoo. Though she was busy preparing for Turbo Goth’s CMJ show at Left Field last week, she took some time to answer questions about her music, art and the origins of Turbo Goth.

It’s still smack-dab deep in the middle of Winter in New York City, but this does not keep us from venturing out, going to a show. I wanted to see Turbo Goth ever since I listened to them prior to SXSW 2014, but I missed them (as so many other cool bands!). They’re even living in New York City by now, and played a decent amount of shows but I managed to miss each one of them. It is high time the spotlight be focused also on our indie bands and acts. They form a deepwell of diverse and amazing talents in the local scene. I will be showcasing once in a while an indie band or act that to my mind deserves a look and more attention. - Joseph Atiliano

Turbo Goth is unique. There I said it! They are unique in the local scene, they play music that is damn interesting and have a swagger reminiscent of Goldfrapp and the White Stripes.
It was a real pleasure to listen to their debut album “Destroy Us All” released earlier this year because it just ticked all the right boxes for what I look for in electronic rock. Once again an unsigned band that is forging ahead with a great sound and a powerful image. -Marcus

Lots of punk-ass acts thrive in the local rock scene, but TURBO GOTH is a whole kind of class. This electronic rock duo is not just a hot pioneering act, they also ooze hardcore-glam style. MBTS cam-sauced this charming smitten couple and pestered them about style, ink and their goosebump-inducing music! Our verdict: sexy + tough-as-nails!
